A different point of view:
I believe in the titular statement. I think people should have the good grace to die before they become a burden to others. All these care homes full of useless old people, it seems like such a waste of resource to take care of them, keep them alive, just so that they can stare gormlessly into space or sleep. Many of them cannot even wipe their own butt.
I'm partly writing this post in the hope that when I'm reaching an age where I can see the writing on the wall, I'll do the honourable thing and call it a day. Something like carbon monoxide poisoning sounds like a good way to go - go to sleep for one last time and never get up.
I do not want to be a burden to others!
Yes, I understand the arguments that we should all love and care for each other, but my personal viewpoint is in the title.
In ancient tribes, the useless old women were beheaded, and old men were exiled beyond the pale into the forest where they would die. I'm not saying this is a good way, but there is common sense to it. It makes a lot of sense if considering resource management. How much resource is wasted on the decrepit elderly that would be of much more benefit to the young!? Is it not selfish of the elderly to waste resources on extending their life beyond it's usefulness!?
