The point of any conflict is resolution; be it through victory or compromise. Both of these take time and effort and if the provocateur isn't accepting of new knowledge or influence and is unwilling to concede victory or to accept compromise, then that time and effort is wasted. Smart people don't like to waste time. They realize the value of time. They use that time to become smarter. They don't care if anyone knows it or not. They don't care if anyone thinks they're "right".
Being "right" is more important than being thought "right".
