Before Buying Something Think "How Will I Dispose of It?"

I've bought so much stuff in my life time, that I thought I really really wanted, only to end up disposing of it some short time later. Which makes me think:

Before buying something, think "how will I dispose of it?"

In 2025 I really don't want to buy any more stuff. I have so many fantastic possessions (that possess me - "you the possessors are possessed!") that I think I really should just enjoy and be happy with what I've got!  And I've thrown so much stuff away, multiple £1000s of pounds worth of stuff. Very very wasteful and not good for my wallet or the environment.

Q: Can I go through 2025 without buying any more stuff?

A: Cars, dolls and dakimakura have been my biggest source of splurging (wasting) the cash in recent years. If I have spare cash in 2025, I want to either invest it, buy gold (the only thing I've bought that doesn't tank in value) or pay for experiences (memories).

  • Dolls:
    • I had over 30 life-size dolls in 2024 and have reduced them down to 18 for the start of 2025. It's not fun disposing of life-sized dolls (yes, I dispose of them, I cut them up into little pieces, really quite barbaric, but it's the best option for me to dispose of them.) I don't want to dispose of another doll, but undoubtedly the time will come (nothing lasts forever). 18 life-size dolls is plenty - a big responsibility - I do not want any more (and - if I did - would have to dispose of an existing doll to make room for more.)
  • Dakimakura:
    • I went a bit crazy at the end of 2024. I have over 100 dakimakura but my limit is 100. There's already a load I need to get rid of somehow (not decided how to do this yet). I definitely won't be getting any more whilst I've got so many I need to get rid of first. And 100 will be my limit when I have disposed of my excess, 1 in, 1 out (disposal).
  • Cars
    • I have 2 cars. I don't really need 2 but 2 is a good number, one fun, one sensible. Both cars are quite sensible to be honest (especially compared to some sportscars I have had in the past). Who knows, maybe I will sell a car in 2025 and go down to just 1. Having 2 cars does mean they share the mileage to an extent, and you have a bit of fault tolerance (if 1 has a problem, you've got another.) I don't have any capacity (parking) for more cars. 2025 will be the first year in many where I don't buy a car!
