The ‘Noble Eightfold Path’ lists:
1. Right View
2. Right Intention
3. Right Speech
4. Right Action
5. Right Livelihood
6. Right Effort
7. Right Mindfulness
8. Right Concentration
There is a 9th ‘Right’ that is more important than those
8.
Right Attitude!
You could argue that ‘Right Attitude’ is covered by ‘Right
Mindfulness’ or ‘Right Effort’ or ‘Right Action’ or ‘Right Intention’ or ‘Right
View’. Attitude is so important that it needs to be a ‘Right’ in it’s own
right. It is the number one ‘Right’.
An example is in work.
Most people, if they won big on the lottery, they’d dump
their job in a flash. We all know that work is not the most exciting thing we
could be doing with our time. We’d all much rather not have a boss, be our own
boss. The Right Attitude is to accept we must work (unless you can find
something that doesn’t require you to be an employee) and we should do the best
job we possibly can. No point having any other attitude to work (work is not
your enemy; it is an enabler for better things.)
This is a powerful quote from Willam J Johnston:
“The most significant Change in a person’s life is
a change of Attitude. Right Attitudes produce Right Actions.”
