Two Days in the Lake District - Lessons Learned

(1) I can go 4 days without looking at:

  • Emails
  • YouTube, Facebook, Pistonheads & other internet frivolity...

(2) After a hearty meal and hearty breakfast, I went from 8am to 8pm with little more that just water. It is do-able!

(3) Writing lists of things to do is a good idea. Get the task done today without any revisit later!

(4) You need a good pair of waterproof, comfortable, and lightweight walking boots for walking in the Lake District. Bonus: Paramo Clothing recommended by mountain guide.

(5) I'm never going to be good in social settings (being sociable is not in my nature), but it was nice to have company to walk with. Would joining 'The Ramblers' be a good idea? (Definitely if I was retired it would be a very good idea.)

(6) Solo/self-guided walks might be a good option for a future holiday. The maps of the Lake District and paths are very good.

(7) You appreciate places like the Lake District more when you live in a relatively flat area. Same with the sea, you appreciate it more when you don't live with it every day.

(8) A low sportscar would struggle with the Honister Pass, and would find the Newlands Pass completely impassable. These are 'C' roads.

(9) I will get it done today!

(10) Remember Marcus Aurelius:

"Men seek retreats for themselves - houses in the country, sea-shores, and mountains; and thou too art wont to desire such things very much. But this is altogether a mark of the most common sort of men, for it is in thy power whenever though shalt choose to retire into thyself. For nowhere either with more quiet or more freedom from trouble does a man retire into than his own soul, particularly when he has within him such thoughts that by looking into them he is immediately in perfect tranquility; and I affirm that tranquility is nothing else than the good ordering of the mind."
